Can Riding a Motorcycle Damage Your Hearing?
By Mid Bike Crisis
You might think the loudest thing on your ride is your exhaust, but it is actually the wind noise doing the damage.
Even with the quietest helmets, long rides can expose you to sound levels high enough to cause permanent hearing loss. If you care about motorcycle hearing protection, now is the time to start paying attention.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, a single blast of very loud noise, or repeated exposure over time, can permanently damage your hearing. Once those tiny hair cells in your inner ear are gone, they do not grow back.
How Wind Noise Damages Your Hearing
Your ear is like a three-stage amplifier:
- Outer ear channels sound in.
- Middle ear boosts vibrations with three tiny bones (the malleus, incus and stapes).
- Inner ear turns those vibrations into signals your brain understands.
But throw in 100 plus decibels of wind noise, and those delicate inner ear hairs can die off, gradually dulling your hearing. You will start missing speech and high-pitched sounds, and once it is gone, it is gone.
How Loud is Too Loud?
Health and safety guidelines worldwide agree that 85 decibels is the maximum safe level for an eight hour day.
Every extra 3dB doubles the sound intensity and halves your safe exposure time.
So:
- 85dB = 8 hours
- 88dB = 4 hours
- 91dB = 2 hours
Now consider this: a study by ISVR Consulting at the University of Southampton found that wind noise alone can hit 106dB at 70mph. That is only safe for about 3 minutes and 45 seconds.
Even 40mph exposes you to 85dB, the same as a blender. So if you are riding without motorcycle earplugs, your hearing is constantly under attack.
My Helmet is Quiet, Do I Still Need Earplugs?
You would think so, but no helmet is truly quiet on the road. The bike’s fairing, screen shape and airflow around your lid all make a difference.
Even the most expensive helmets from Shoei, Arai, or Schuberth still let in enough wind noise to need motorcycle earplugs.
In short, yes, you still need motorcycle hearing protection.
Will Earplugs Stop Me Hearing Traffic?
Not the good ones.
Quality motorcycle earplugs filter out harmful low-frequency wind noise while still letting through higher frequencies like sirens, horns and intercom chatter.
That is exactly what inspired me to create HushR Earplugs, designed by riders, for riders.
HushR cuts wind noise by up to 23dB, while still allowing you to hear your intercom, traffic and engine note. They use Selective Sound Technology, so you feel connected to the ride, not isolated from it.
Reusable, washable and built to last, no more throwaway foam plugs or ringing ears after every blast.
The Sweet Spot
-23dB is the sweet spot because it reduces wind roar and helmet turbulence to a safe, comfortable level without blocking out important sounds like traffic, sirens, or your bike’s engine note. Go lower and you risk muting too much — go higher and you’re still exposed to harmful wind noise over long rides. At -23dB, you get effective hearing protection and clear situational awareness, making it ideal for real-world motorcycling
Custom vs Universal Earplugs
Everyone’s ears are different, and comfort is key.
Custom-moulded plugs can fit perfectly, but they are pricey, usually £80 to £120, and your ears change shape over time. Foam plugs work but can feel uncomfortable or pop out under your helmet.
That is why HushR sits right in the sweet spot: comfort, clarity and proper motorcycle hearing protection without the fuss or high cost
The Real-World Risk
Ask any long-term rider, wind noise catches up with you. Many bikers do not notice hearing damage until it is too late. The first sign is tinnitus, that constant ringing that never stops.
One rider summed it up perfectly:
“I thought wind noise was just part of the ride. Now I have permanent hearing loss right in the frequency of the wind. Wish I had worn motorcycle earplugs years ago.”
The Bottom Line
If you ride at anything over 40mph, your hearing is at risk.
It does not matter how quiet your bike or helmet is, the wind noise will always win.
Protect your ears now with proper motorcycle hearing protection so you can still enjoy that beautiful engine note later.
